So I'm starting a new campaign with some close friends who are die-hard base building/survival officionados. One is a developer for a game in that genre. They're new to D&D but lifetime gamers.
I would like to incorporate a base building component into the campaign---they'll have to build their home, its capacities, defenses, etc. Any ideas on how to get this going or maintain it? Anyone tried this before?
I'm a little surprised that nobody's mentioned it yet because it seems ubiquitous in this space, but Matt Colville's Strongholds & Followers book is super popular and well -received for this exact thing. I'm not sure what I'm allowed or not allowed to link so I won't, but I can say from experience that it works really well.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?

I don't mean to be rude, just brief.
Read the Dungeon Master's Guide - Between Adventures - Dungeon Master’s Guide - Sources - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com)
It's not perfect but it a great start. There are no end of 3rd party publishers who've published suppliments for this purpose too. I would never use DMs Guild due to it's stupidly high royalty fee for the site - {WH} Fortresses, Temples, & Strongholds, rules for building and customizing player-owned structures! - Dungeon Masters Guild | Dungeon Masters Guild (dmsguild.com)
{WH} Traders & Merchants! Inventories for 30 different types of merchants! - Dungeon Masters Guild | Dungeon Masters Guild (dmsguild.com)
DM session planning template - My version of maps for 'Lost Mine of Phandelver' - Send your party to The Circus - Other DM Resources - Maps, Tokens, Quests - 'Better' Player Character Injury Tables?
Actor, Writer, Director & Teacher by day - GM/DM in my off hours.
Thanks for the links! Appreciated. I presumed someone might have done this before effectively.
There's some 5e friendly UA about Bastions that is worth a look:

MCDM also has books on this. I found Kingdom's and Warfare to be worth it for the ideas:

The 2e Birthright Campaign Setting is also an option that works in 5e but is VERY detailed:
