I'm planning for a session tomorrow and I got kind of stuck on part of the plot. Wondering if any of you can help.
The party's in the far north in an area where they've encountered several strange time distortions. They've just encountered the mysterious Man in Black, who's explained that the distortions are being caused by a certain object that someone else in the nearby area has.
So they've got a pretty clear goal - find whoever has the object so they can stop the time distortions. I'll probably figure out some way they can track the object so they can get to it.
The problem is, I have no clue what to do between the start of the session and the end. I'd like it to end with them finding the person with the object because there'll be a big twist when they realize who the person who has it is and I figure that'd be a pretty good cliffhanger. I had some ideas for how this session might go but then the party chose to team up with the Man in Black, who is, like, clearly evil.
So if anyone has any ideas of anything I could do in between to fill out the session - things that could happen on their journey to find the object - let me know. Thanks!
Uh, we're about a year in, probably a month or two left. So we could take a couple sessions on this part potentially, there's plenty of room to manuever
Yeah, that would be great if this was where we were starting, but the party's been encountering the distortions for the last 46 sessions so they've already got experience with them. They already have a reason to want to stop them and throwing a lot more at them right now might be kind of annoying, idk
You could use the party teaming up with your party to your advantage! The Man in Black, especially if the party doesn't understand he's evil yet, could end up backstabbing the party and ridicule their obliviousness in the process. For filler, the party could be ambushed at some point or have to stop a raid on a place, where swarms of enemies attack the party. The most important detail is that The Man In Black stays back and is almost never hit by the enemies, suggesting a probable alliance? Though I'm unsure if you already have a fixed character description of the Man In Black, you could give him very personable traits to further influence that character-npc bond which makes it a hundred times more impactful when you finally throws the cliff hanger bomb on them. The item tracking said object could lead the party in the complete opposite direction, or be tampered while the party is resting (perhaps mention that they hear footsteps during a long rest and when they try to find the noise they instead find raccoons or similar small animals. The footsteps could come from the Man in Black, but he attempts to mask his sounds of tampering with the object by leading animals into the camp?).

The Question is how long of a campaign are you running? One sitting , or is this going to be drawn out?
