I get what a vitebriate is and how they function( Vitebriate - Monsters - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com) ). But what really throws me for a loop is that in the suggested adventure at Faren's Rest, the vitebriate is hiding behind Rolant basically all of the time. And 1/day reaction allows her to redirect all damage back to the thrall via psychic ability. In this case, Roland only has 4 HP. Basically any decent attack would just kill the thrall. If the goal is to free Rolant, it seems like that's pretty impossible if you play the vitebriate as written for a party of just level 2 adventurers. You would need to break the domination or kill the vitebriate, both of which would probably kill the thrall in the process. They would have to be pretty snappy and heal Rolant but in that case, it seems like she could just Dominate him as soon as he is conscious again as she can use it on the same target multiple times as it would be her focus. Am I misinterpreting something here? I love the idea and creature in general, but the context in which it is applied seems iffy at best.
Are there some modifications I could make to make this seem a little less unfair? Removing the Reaction seems like it really negates the threat of the vitebriate.
