Sorry if it sounds weird in the title, but what I mean is: say I had a 13 and a 17 while I was generating ability scores, would you allow me to take a point from the 17 and put it in the 13 to make 14 and 16? This happens to me all the time when I’m rolling ability scores (I always get a few odds that I can’t put my racial ASI into), and it drives me crazy!
But as a matter of opinion, i would say no. Odd or imperfect ability scores or whatnot are part of the charm of rolling ability scores in the first place.
Some DMs may give a bit of bad luck protection like a minimum total bonus or no more than X negative bonuses or even point buy if you roll and don’t like your stats. But that, again, is going to be up to the table.
I would not. But I allow you to put your racial ASIs wherever you want to. Even without that you get your first ASI at level 4 and can turn the 13 & 17 into a 14 & 18 if you want to.
Probably not. Those scores are something to work towards as you level up, and provide the stakes for choosing either a feat or an ability score increase when you level up.
Nope. Imperfect characters are almost a requirement for any game I run. I tend to heavily discourage any sort of min/max behaviors. Just wait until you get an ASI or something that will level those out to what you want them to be.
What I meant was I already used Tasha’s rules and it’s in my other scores. Also jayvir I don’t think it’s min/max behavior if I’m trying to take one point out of one score and put it in a lower score so they’re even numbers, isn’t min/maxing taking from the lower score to put into the higher score?
Sounds like you’ve sorted this, but always worth remembering that you can distribute your ASIs as 3 x +1, which might help if you have a surfeit of odd numbers.
The total is not the same as before because 17 (+3) and 13 (+1) is not equal to 16 (+3) and 14 (+2). Changing the 17 to a 16 makes no immediate difference but the 13 to 14 immediately nets you a gain in attribute score bonuses.
Sure and I'm explaining to you why the total point value isn't terrifically meaningful, why they are not the same despite appearances and why most DM's won't allow you to do that.

The rules don’t have much to say on this.

I suppose you’re right. Rolling ability scores is always weird. One time I got like five scores that were below 10 and odd and one 18. :/

When we use standard array or roll ability score, i don't allow playing with numbers. When we use point buy then i do.
If you rolled then no. That’s part of the risk/reward equation in rolling. If you’re doing point buy and you had second thoughts at level 1, probably.

My actual answer to this is "I don't use rolled stats, and the question is moot for point buy".

I'd ask the DM if you can use the Tasha's rules that allow you to move racial ability points to any atribute.

Plus, since I already got a bunch of replies, I’m definitely not going to do it.

I meant in the total point value.

To be honest I didn’t even realize that I would be increasing a modifier when I asked this question.
