What would a research facility in Thay look like???
Creating a campaign where a charismatic Dr.T experiments on undeath and the arcane in the Surthay ResearchFacility. What type of rooms, and items would be lying around in this facility? What would be unique about a Research Facility that is particularly interested in undeath
They used to occasionally visit a big field where they would test the effects of decomposition on various different corpses that had died or been left exposed in different ways. That would be a pretty macabre thing to stumble across. Especially if these corpses were now in undeath. Could also provide an opportunity for LOTS of traps.
I mean, it makes sense, right. A Lich (or any sentient undead) would want to know what they or their army are going to look like in 10, 50, 100 years time and also how their bodies are effected by various things and situations.

If you really want to know, look into the Dead in Thay adventure from the Yawning Portal book here on Beyond. That whole adventure takes places in a Thayan research facility. It's called the "Doom Vault."

FYI, that field where they let bodies decompose is actually a real place, I think it was called the Body Farm and run by the FBI for various training programs.
Back to D&D...one place I would love to pop into a campaign would be a greenhouse or farm where someone is cultivating Corpse Flowers. They have zombies or skeletons walking around tending to the plants and occasionally the BBEG in charge sends living people so they can observe the corpse flowers hunting and feeding habits or, for a slightly less evil variation, the BBEG has come to an agreement with the local towns and villages to "deal" with any criminals they have which means the surrounding area is remarkably law abiding.

Did you ever watch the original CSI?
