My DM needs a break and thought I would setup a little mini-campaign so he can take a break. I have a concept but need help ironing out some details.
Concept - Characters will explore a single (yet sizeable) dungeon. But they will be stuck in a time loop that will restart when a character dies (groundhogs day / edge of tomorrow) but will retain their experience (level). So its not just a matter of figuring out the dungeon but also about becoming powerful enough to finish.
But, I need help with beginning and reasoning. Maybe Skyrim style they are just coming up on the dungeon (mixture of volunteers and criminals) or maybe just start them off in a cage/prison inside already. Doesn't really need a huge backstory, but at least the start of one incase they want to continue the "campaign" later.
Just looking for some ideas, thoughts, and inspiration. What do you guys think? (will start at level 1 and finish around 5-10, maybe a level or 2 per session)
these are some ideas i had 1. The dungeon itself is cursed, having once been the lair of a powerful lich or other ancient being. The curse binds anyone who enters the dungeon in a never-ending cycle of life and death until they can break the curse by defeating the dungeon’s final guardian or solving a puzzle hidden within.
2. An artifact hidden deep within the dungeon has created the time loop. The characters may not realise this at first, but as they explore, they discover clues pointing to the artifact’s existence and its potential to be used for good or evil. Destroying or claiming the artifact might be the key to ending the loop.

Architect of Cosmic Tapestries! Title given by Drum.
A celestial in my game did a time loop so the group defeated the big bad of the area and revived the warlock of said celestial. If you got a cleric or something in your group with raise dead you could do that too.
That some higher being wants revenge could be the case too.
There could be a danger in that dungeon that needs to be taken care of to protect the nearby town, and a god worshipped in the town gives the group as many chances as needed to take care of it.
Love story - two beings who love each other are trapped in the dungeon they created to loop to save each other but have been unable to escape the dungeon without one of them dying.
Ignorance - a strange magical explosion creates the time loop because some BBEG is tampering with a magical artifact.
Cage - a divine being created the loop in order to trap a monster inside the dungeon.
Training - a divine being created the loop to train their followers.
One possibility for a reason is the Lich Acererak. He basically goes around creating deadly dungeons largely for shits and giggles. One that's a time loop of people dying again and again sounds right up his street
I had an idea this morning for a Halloween themed one shot where the players turn out to be ghosts re-living the dungeon that killed them, and the more they repeat the better they're able to do each time until they finally get to the end and can move on to the next life.

Depends what kind of story you like:

Love the ideas. Thanks ladies and gents.
Only thing left, ideas on how to TPK the whole group if one person dies. Don't want anyone sitting out to long.
Like the items to get in are themselves cursed, binding the lives of the party together. Or magic trap at the entrance. Any other ideas?
