I am going to be starting my next D&D campaign soon using the new rules. For people who have already run games with the new rules, which monsters did you use? The rules are similar enough to where it doesn’t seem like it will be problematic using the 2014 monsters with the 2024 rules. But I am curious what might be expected from monsters in the new rules book or if anyone has encountered any issues (i.e. the 2014 monsters being too weak or not working with the new encounter balance, etc).
Expect the 2014 monster to feel a range between similar to weaker than their 2024 version. Over-all it won't be that much of an issue, especially in the early levels. By the time you want stronger monsters rolling in, the new book should be on shelves.

I just ran a Slaad encounter using 2024. It turns out that 2024 has no way to cure disease. You might want to consider 2014 methods to cure disease if you use any of those kind of creatures

Yeah? You think so? I figured the same about the lower level monsters. However, I wondered if the monsters from 2014 might be about the same power as the 2024 monsters. The new XP budget in the 2024 DMG is higher than it used to be in 2014, especially as it scales in level. I assumed this was to adjust for PCs being more powerful now than in 2014. But I assume with a higher XP budget that the 2014 monsters are still a challenge… still have yet to confirm myself of course.
But I bet you are right and that the lower level monsters will be fine until the new MM is out!

Holy macaroni! Heal in 2024 no longer cures disease??? That’s very strange… Comparing it to 2014 I see that Heal in the older rules edition DOES cure disease.
This is the kind of thing I was wondering about…
Well, I skimmed the PHB and didn’t see anything about diseases yet. But when I looked in the appendix of the DMG I saw “diseases” listed. But next to it, it says to go to page 61 where Magical Contagions are discussed. So my guess is that Magical Contagions are replacing what disease was in the game. In the DMG it basically says that if you rest for 3 days that the PC can attempt to get over the magical contagion by then rolling a Con save DC 15.
I am assuming you used the Blue Slaad. If the PCs survived the fight, and the were inflicted with the disease, it is looking like the way they can now get over this is by following the magical contagion rules.
That is what I have found so far. But I am really glad you noticed that and discussed here.
Who knows how a Blue Slaad in the new MM will work, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that it’s “disease” is now a “magical contagion” that they can inflict.
At least the authors of the DMG had enough foresight to understand that someone like me might go looking for the term disease to lead me to what I can now assume will be the updated version of the power.
Makes the backwards compatibility side of using the old MM a little janky here, unless I am missing something.
I hope me finding this helps you and your players. It would be annoying to have to figure that out in the middle of a game though haha

It's because diseases are no longer used in the 2024 rules. Now they're being changed to other conditions.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Yeah! I started gathering that by what I found, but is it stated anywhere specifically? On one hand I don’t know why an edition would need to explain how old rules are changing. But on the other hand… we all played the old edition and need to know this right now!
I have been so busy with work I haven’t had as much time to read through all the rules as I had hoped.

Most mundane diseases are being changed to the Poisoned condition, which is why the Potion of Vitality now ends the Poisoned condition instead of curing diseases. Any potion, item or spell that cures the Poisoned condition should work with mundane diseases in 2024.
It was probably only really meant to cover the kind of effects given my in-game monsters or spells, but inevitably led to players asking "Hey, can my Potion of Vitality cure [enter real-life hereditary disease or disabled condition here]??". My guess is this led to awkward real-world connotations in a fantasy world, so they probably decided to ditch it in favour of the Poisoned condition or "Contagion" (to specifically mean a (fantasy) disease that can be caught or magically instilled by a monster, trap, spell etc).

I think 'disease' was too broad a term.
