Hello, I am a DM/player. And i have been hosting a D&D group for a bit, but our campaign just ended, and they are expecting me to come up with a new one, if yall have any ideas, i need them, i also need some character lore, but i can do that by meself
There's an indie game called Microscope that tells a history over a big timeline while zooming in and out to focus on specific events. It's a great game to build a world or backstory and then start a D&D game where that leaves off.
Have fun!

My players seem to like starting with a published adventure and then the rest of it is homebrewed (example: we started in Greenerest and did the intro to the Tyranny of Dragons campaign, but now have gone off the rails in a homebrew Cult of the Dragon adventure). There's also just plaga-I mean basing your campaign off a movie, book, tv show, etc. If you want a really long campaign that may or may not take years, stitch any awesom idea you have into a story and go at it

In the words of the great philosopher, Unicorse, "Aaaannnnd why should I care??"
Your PCs are soldiers in an army at war with another kingdom, eventually reveal that they've been serving an evil king the whole time and let them choose to either stay or defect. This honestly only works if you make sure that the PCs have living NPCs that they have deep, emotional connections with that would not follow them. If they stay, a heroic party rises on the other side, a real fellowship of the ring sort of group. If they leave, the NPCs that they left behind become bitter rivals hellbent on the PCs' downfall. (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)
