I'm putting together a oneshot where it sets the scene with a tiny dungeon crawl as children, with 4hp and 1 damage attacks. I want something that they can face which won't annihilate them, but which will be at least a little interesting for 1-2 rounds. With 4 players, action economy should sway the day.
It'll be in a cave, so I was thinking maybe rats or something. I also have to anticipate that they will probably be against hurting animals, so may need more of a monstery monster!
Contemplating a Crab, which can block the way. Anyone got any ideas? I looked at a Lemure as CR 0, but 13hp will drag!
Crabcat, monkey, really, really, weak versions of normal monsters or the evil, devilish, hellish... house cat.

My first thought is a giant spider, which can shoot webs instead of attacking. The old version also paralyses on 0 instead of killing. Though you may need to reduce the damage a bit.
Another one could be a goon balloon they are basically designed to die and pop to spread poison.
I would probably just create custom monsters, D&D wasn't really written to work on these scale. For kid-friendly stuff, I suggest things like animated evil toys and goo-monsters. A reasonable boss monster would be 3 damage (scary but not a one-shot)/5 hit points, minion monsters would be 1 damage/1 hit point.

Top of mind suggestions:
Juvenile Mimic, Displacer Beast Kitten, Gremishka, Pest Mascot, or Wretched Sorrowsworn
Just drop the HP and damage of the ones that would be more lethal than you are looking for.

Giant cockroaches. Nobody complains about killing these gross creatures.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I'm thinking the juvenile mimic might be a good option, could lead to a fun encounter!
Only want it to be a short one to set the scene, the party will then "grow up" really quickly, for a reunion and the adventure proper!

A swarm of angry balloons; you could also just put in a bird with a KNIFE and have that be the monster.
