My campaign involves a gnoll apocalypse. 10s of thousands of gnolls pillaging the countryside while making their way to the great walled city where Yeenoghu will free his father Mordiggian from the dark tapestry. What I need from my colleagues are ideas and inspiration of how the previous 4 or 5 gnoll apocalypses were stomped out. I have an ancient sect of giants brought fire from the sky and mountains to scorch the countryside, resulting in a wasteland taking 1,000 years to recover. maybe they find a staff of meteor swarm in a guarded barrow. I'm hoping that the PCs will follow these stories as adventure hooks.
A circle of druids conjured a tsunami to wash them into the sea.
A tarasque was summoned by an organization of wizards that caused the earth to rip open beneath them creating a massive rift valley.
A group of treants woke an entire forest to battle them.
An ancient dragon created an army of kobolds to battle them, the traumatized survivors fled civilization and created a massive underground warren.somewhere.
An industrial city mass-produced acids / poisons which they magically animated into oozes which they hurled into the gnoll army cleaving behind lakes and rivers of acid.
A group of adventurers used a devastation orb to blow a hole down to the underdark underneath the army where the gnolls became food for mindflayers.
A group of powerful casters created an artifact that captured the souls of those killed by the horde before they could pass on and implanted them into the gnolls themselves. These gnolls, cursed with new emotions and consciences, turned on the others and eventually the horde destroyed itself. A small, hidden community of gnolls that still carry souls and are not driven by Yeenoghu's hunger guard the pieces of this broken artifact

Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
A massive earthquake decimated the region, reducing the cities to rubble and destroying the gnolls.
A magical artifact brought down the moon from the sky and destroyed the gnolls. the artifact shattered into 5 pieces after that, landing in various places. one landed on the moon, which has now been returned to the sky.
A mysterious, all powerful entity calling themselves "the Dungeon Master" emerged from the ocean and said to the gnolls, "can you guys wait for about 500 years? There are some heroes that i want to defeat you with, but they haven't been born yet. just go home for now"
It’s started raining and all the gnolls just went home because they didn’t like getting wet and it wasn’t fun anymore (not joking, this was the climax of the first Predator comic)
Gnolls are a hybrid of humanoid and hyena. Hyenas, despite not being canines, are nonetheless unable to eat chocolate without experiencing severe gastric distress and even death. But gnolls (like hyenas) also have insatiable appetites and will consume anything that even remotely looks like food. So just scatter some chocolate among your food stores, among your herd animals, and place a piece of chocolate on or in every corpse. Maybe you won't wipe out the entire gnoll horde, but you might whittle them down to a level that the soldiers and guards can manage.

Cheers and thanks!
Yeenoghu is an ongoing background threat in my campaign. Forces aligned with Baphomet would be a good foil to have an eternal struggle against the forces of Yeenoghu.
Plague. Gnolls aren't known for being hygienic, so a plague or virus could easily wipe out thousands of them. Leaving the rest to be destroyed by their enemies.
Plagues, meteors, and all other sorts of natural disasters would be good for the first apocalypse because Yeenoghu wouldn't have done it before and he would be unpreppared
For the second or third one, I'm thinking a "coincidental" zombie apocalypse wiped them out, or maybe Yeenoghu got slain by powerful adventurers and held up at home by Demogorgon or something
for the fourth and fifth, the realm has gone through so many apocalypses that everyone was just ready for them

DM: He doesn't have much besides the skin on his bones.
If this is the 5th or 6th gnoll apocalypse, then surely the world would be ready for them at this point like WolfeCriedPup said. Could there be a failsafe in place that the cities have for the coming apocalypse? "Break Glass in Case of Gnolls"?
Maybe the failsafe was used the previous apocalypse to stop them, but Yeenoghu accounted for it this time. Maybe the civilizations don't know that Yeenoghu has a plan to remove their failsafe this time.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
