So I recently started running the Lost Mine of Phandelver with a group of new players (I'm a new Dm, btw). At the end of the last session, they had just bested the Redbrand Hideout and are about to embark on the wilderness part of the adventure. So I was wondering if there are any maps online that show where cities are, but not areas such as Cragmaw Castle or other areas that are meant to be hidden to the rest of the world?
If you have LMoP through dndbeyond, there's a "View Player Version" link just below the regional map at the bottom of the "The Forgotten Realms" section.
Same with the map of Phandalin - the "View Player Version" link will give you a Phandalin map without any labels on the buildings.
Hmm.. I'm not sure off the top of my head - you might be able to make a partial purchase of the LMoP module for just the maps, but I can't tell since I already have the whole thing.
Aha - the artist who created the maps has them available for purchase. You can get the whole bundle for $10, or the two versions of the sword coast map (DM and player) for $2: http://prints.mikeschley.com/p856083253
It has been a long time since I DM'd, but when I did, say 12 years ago, most companies provided player handouts on their websites. Is the trend no for you to have to purchase the maps and handouts?
Not sure - I've never seen the contents of the physical version of the starter set, and I generally get modules online through dmsguild and the like.
It does seem odd that the box wouldn't have both marked and unmarked versions of the maps, considering the online version you can buy through dndbeyond provides both.
It also depends on the licensing between the artist and WotC. In this case, the maps were made by Mike Schley, a prolific cartographer for RPGs. Since he sells all his maps on his site, I assume that license he negotiated was only for the print rights in the boxed set, and that he kept the online rights for himself so he could resell on his site.
So, I also assume if WotC had wanted to have online rights as well, they would have had to pay him more (increasing the cost of the boxed set) or found a cartographer who would work for less, and subsequently ended up with sub-par maps.

"Orcs are savage raiders and pillagers with stooped postures, low foreheads, and piggish faces with prominent lower canines that resemble tusks." MM p245 (original printing) You don't OWN your books on DDB: WotC can change them any time. What do you think will happen when OneD&D comes out?
I'm speculating the reason why there are no battle maps in the starter set is the same reason why there are no included miniatures; it's a starter set. The game assumes that a first-time DM is running it, and doesn't want to deal with complex battle maps. But I agree, it would be nice to have a player version of the maps.

Unfortunately, I bought the physical version of the starter set. Is there anywhere else online I can access the "View Player Version"?

Also, there is a general map of the North on dmsguild that comes with an unlabelled version: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/184277/FR-Map-The-North-5e
Thanks so much mate!

The physical copy only has DM maps inside the campaign book, all with labels, I just checked my box set.

You can buy them from Mike Schley's website. https://prints.mikeschley.com/p856083253

I googled Neverwinter to Phandalin map and found several good player suitable maps. I used one of those.
