This is all a storyline that I have made up on the fly. I am trying to piece together a halfway intelligible story. I am DM'ing a team of friends and family.
"Ruins of Telia" will focus on two countries within the world of Breoria. The Republic of Trereleno stands north of the Kingdom of Telia. The two countries have combined military and industry for security and new found lives of luxury. Our story takes place within the Kingdom of Telia, where all out war is about to be unleashed.
Current Storyline: The team has been introduced to each other. They are all tied by storyline to an awkward but overly friendly mage that the team just managed to get in contact with. During a typical bandit raid, a mysterious coin was found amongst the remains of the bandit leader. The coin is used to connect to an unknown force telepathically. The team seeks answers from the awkward mage about the coin, and relaxes from returning from a perilous adventure. Something catastrophic is about to occur, and they will all have to flee with the mage to dodge this impending doom (this is where the current storyline is).
Overall Storyline: Ten years ago a major war forced two neighboring countries to join forces and defeat the oncoming siege, the Republic of Trereleno and the Kingdom of Telia. Combining their military forces and industrial knowledge, the two countries succeeded in pushing back the sieging army. The peak of the war was mainly fought and ended near a military tower overseeing a vantage point, thus earning the name "The War of the Elden Spire." The tower connects to several other towers across both countries, and uses perplexing teleportation magic to move from one tower to the next. Whomever was responsible for leading the first war efforts against the combined countries has yet to reveal themselves. The catastrophic event is a new invasion of the combined countries. This time, the enemies have acquired the perplexing teleportation magic against the combined countries. A time of peace and posterity will come to a sudden end for the combined countries, and war will be brought to all ends of their land. The mastermind behind the wars has been revealed as a demon lord trying to return home to the 'Purple Haze.' The demon lord is collecting sacrifices for a mass ritual, and other magical artifacts to achieve his goals.
Please let me know what you think, and if I may be overlooking a major plot point or loophole. I am a new DM and still learning. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
With a demon lord being utilized and bandit raids at the beginning, I'm assuming you are going levels 1-20. It sounds great overall but something's should always be kept in mind, teleport can get round all sorts of obstacles although quite high level, also, why lead a war to collect sacrifices? It's a lot of work, a lot of the people willing to die in battle for you would just be better as sacrifices as they are clearly willing. An easier thing is domination of the continent and acquiring of things, people or places to complete a ritual. Another thing to keep in mind is, no monster is any match for an army. Even the terrasque would get defeated pretty easily, I'm assuming the new addition, and your players are the same, there are some ways to get round it but if your players have to fight an army, they should take out the leaders and the rest will crumble because. All this is just speculatory advice that you probably won't even need because it sounds great and I'm sure you'll enjoy running it.

Imagine a sorcerer riding a catoblepas into an epic battle to the last minute of black-heart by two steps from hell.
I greatly appreciate the input. Tossing my campaign members into the middle of an invasion was my original plan. Their goal was to simply survive the oncoming waves of destruction. they are already running back into the fray after one session of learning about the invasion. It is backfiring already and I need to consider a lot - the direction of my campaign was meant to handle skirmishes and stragglers from the invasion, not protect an entire (ill-prepared) city from an invasion.
As far as the sacrifices go, it could be a demonic ritual that requires unwilling sacrifices, which still poses a serious loop in the storyline - why invade when there are much better ways to gather masses of individuals undetected? This is a question I need to think over and flesh out a good answer for.
I do not have clear stepping stones for my campaign to get from where they are now to the point where they can face the BBEG - the demon lord. You bring good ideas and I will likely incorporate this into my campaign - sniping off leaders and working steadily up the ladder towards the demon lord.
Thanks greatly for your input! I have a lot to think about. And yes I am having an absolute blast doing it! :D
