As the title suggests, I need some help with bastions. I have a 3 (sometimes 5) player game, and I want to give them a bastion. I think I want it to be an old castle wrested from a cult, or something like that, but i'm not sure how to suggest that this place they kicked the monsters out of might make a cool base without blatantly telling them that. Also, i would like some suggestions as to what the bastion would be. Like I mentioned above, I do want it to be an old monsters hideout, but I would like some ideas for the precise details. Thank you!

My first thought is, there’s nothing wrong with telling them outright. It’s actually a good conversation to have, because what if they don’t want one? Making sure the players buy in to the idea is going to be important. As far as what to do with it, have you checked out the ‘24 DMG? It’s got some good ideas.
It sounds like you want to just give them a building that is pre-existing and have that be their Bastion and base of operations. If that is the case, and you want them to clear the monsters before they can use it, you have a LOT of options.
Here are just a few that pop into my head:
Large Manor House that was abandoned because it was haunted (you pick what kind of spirits and/or undead to put in there).
Partially collapsing Castle that was overrun by something. The parts that are still standing are in good order, and they could spend some money fixing up the rest (gives them something to spend money on).
Cave that leads into the side of a mountain that turns into an ancient Dwarven structure and was overrun by things from the Underdark.
Wizard Tower that is still occupied by a corrupt wizard.
Island Stronghold that was taken over by Pirates and other things.
Staying on the path of clearing the building out and communicating to them that the structure would make a good Bastion, you can do this multiple times (stating it differently each time), as they clear the structure. You can say things like "Walking up to the front doors of the building, you realize they are still in good condition and would make a formidable barrier if they were properly secured", or "As you explore the dusty old rooms, you get the impression that this would make a good place to live if it was cleaned up a bit".
Now moving on from there, as Xalthu stated, there is lots of info on Bastions in the new 2024 DMG.
If you are interested in that, here is a link to the section on Bastions.
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
