Yesterday I watched; The Seven Deadly Sins, anime and really liked the idea of "sacred treasures" and instantly thought - I can use that.
So now, instead of a legendary artificact with a single use, I plan on giving my party my version of a sacred treasure.
Each party member will get one (six in total).
Sacred treasures are legendary; powerful, sentiment artifiacts that were giving to the original creator races by the Gods and used to forge the world.
The initial rush of power when you first atune to a sacred treasure will now perform the single plot use that I had originally planned on using legendary artifiacts for but a sacred treasure is much more than just an artifact.
When a characters soul and the soul of the sacred treasure resonate together - great power will be awoken inside the weilder of the sacred treasure. Boosting their level over level 20 - into heroic levels.
Allowing the party to stand against the demon lords, driving them back from whence they came and saving the world from being devoured by the abyss.
So the 2019 campaign will focuss on the characters expanded backstories and acquiring their sacred treasures.
2020, will be the stories of the treasures themselves, how they were created, where the come from and portents of their true power.
2021 - the last campaign in this series. This is where the characters will unlock their sacred treasures true power and have to face the demon lords and the abyss.
That's pretty much the roadmap now that I have the idea of giving my players "sacred treasures" and I am just wondering what you all think.
Can you see any downside to giving my party such powerful weapons? They won't get to use them just yet. The plan is that they have to play through their treasures backstory, to truly understand their treasure before they can unlock it's true power in the last of this series of campaigns.

It depends on how powerful they actually are (how much damage they can potentially do), and how early you give it to your players. Level 17 or above players are usually have legendary magic items.
Narratively, it sounds great, get the MacGuffin and do a final battle. The only problem mechanically would be if the items throw off CR balancing, which would make encounter building difficult for you.

Would they be weapons, armor, wondrous items, or what?
