I recently made the decision to get into DnD Beyond to help streamline my 20 year Campaign Universe. Currently I DM for 4 different Groups that all share the same universe. One of them is fairly new and one that meets once a year to continue the same story we has since high school. All the groups choices can and have affected other groups during their respective. sessions. Now I'm spending some time to transfer a lot of my content digitally.
Now I'm at an impasse to ask my players to join into DnD beyond as some of them do not even own 5e books. Have any of you fine DMs experienced this before I decide to hit that sub button.
They can join DnD Beyond, but I don't believe they need to join at a paying level.
However, if you are a subscriber ( I'm unsure at what level ), you can then share the 5e sourcebooks that you've purchased online, with your campaign Players.
That's what I do - but I went in whole hog and got the Legendary Bundle, and the Master level subscription - which is not an inconsiderable spend, but it gives my non-paying Players access to all the 5e material online.

Your players can join DnD Beyond for free and if you add them to your campaign as a master tier subscriber, they will have access to everything that you have. I believe you can limit what they can and cannot access (ie. modules, DMG, ex.) so they can't look at whatever you don't want them to see. If you look at the sub section, it tells you can share your content with up to 3 groups of 12 players each, so I don't know if that affects anything for you or not. I hope this helps you decide.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
Update: I hit the sub button and a lot of my players were ecstatic to sign up for free and use my content for our sessions. One group however did not sign up but we only meet once a year, so that’s okay. I feel like now that the groups are under one roof so to speak, they are starting to know who is who in the Adventurer’s Guild Hall.
