So I came up with a semi half quarter ish (I dunno) idea base for 2 magic items. My players have a broken sword that is very magical but blocks identify. And I wanna introduce them to a set of armor later on. The sword, (once a longsword now a shortsword) I have an idea of that it's sentient but it has to be unlocked. Though I though of what if the armor is more or less "alive". So instead of the regular sentient weapon, it's a sentient armor. Anyway, I have a halfing ranger, gloom stalker conclave and I kinda want these items to be based of shadowy stuff. I'm hoping that I could get some help from you guys! Any ideas or suggestions on how to make it.... something(?) I dunno. But any idea you have to a set of magical armor and sword would be great! ^^ Thanks! ^^
Maybe hit up google and check out the lore around Blackflame from the Mystara setting - it was detailed in the Five Shires Gazeteer for an earlier edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

As I've not played in Mystara yet I sadly do not understand what it is. From what I gathered it is a halfing relic of some kind? That is about all that I got from my research. Not that it was hours of research as I quickly discovered that I did not understand the things spoke about, nor the time line. Sorry. Could you perhaps explain what it is? Or is that a little to difficult as I've never played in Mystara? Though I really do want to some day. ^^
An idea that came to mind for me is, have both the sword and armor sentient but only when they are together and attuned to the same character. Depending on how you want your sentient pair to be, you can have them constantly bickering with each other, they are comedic, or they just get along. It'll mostly depend on how serious or not you want everything to be. Instead of having the sword block identify, instead just have it identify the properties that shouldn't be hidden. If it's a +1 shortsword, that's what is identified, and not anything else about it. Once both the armor and sword are together, then everything becomes understood about them. This is just an idea of one person and there many more out there. Come up with what you want them to be and do and go from there.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
Shadow armour: whilst in dim light or darkness you are considered under the effect of blur. If you are hit, this ability is suppressed until the end of the next long rest. The sentient element withdraws into its shell becoming much less talkative. Possibly +2 to stealth/advantage on stealth rolls depending on lvl.
Shadow blade: emits an aura of darkness, it casts dim light in a 20ft radius. If this dim light is emitted in dim light it is instead darkness. If the dim light is emitted in darkness it is considered magical darkness. The user is able to see 20ft darkness as if it were bright light, including all darkness emitted by this blade. ( if a source of the light cantrip enters this area it is dispelled) the weapon deals necrotic damage. When a creature is killed by this weapon, a shadow is summoned on a roll of 20 on a d20 under the control of the blade (active only if the full set is attuned). (Maybe +1/+2 weapon as well)
The blade and armour act as a hivemind when together, 'listen to us' 'we think you should abandon them' etc. (But quiet, incomplete when apart)
Personality: selfish, all about no.1 will always prefer to avoid a fight (stealth kills are fine)

Possible idea for both items
Very interesting. While the dim light to darkness is a cool ability, the reason I'm not going to have it passively active is that a gloom stalker is invisible in total darkness. But else, very interesting! ^^

Oh the sword is by all means a +1. But I think the way I've built it up in my head is that the magic is suppressed when they are to far apart. They've just found a adamantine circlet that has a connection to the sword. So I'm hoping that soon they will start hearing voices in their sleep ^^.

You could always just invert a Sun blade.
There's also an armour item in XGtE that adds harmless shadows. Could work without making it too powerful.
I should look into that! ^^
