So the weekly game I run is with a few of my closest friends, but as we've all become adults and started families, we've settled in separate locales. We play through Discord using their video chat system. It's proven so far to be a good option with great connectivity, sound and video quality and the ability to quickly share images and text into the shared chat.
The last thing I would like to introduce into the campaign to add that "extra" edge is background music, especially for situations like traveling, taverns and combat. I am having some great difficulty in finding the best way to have this audio be played at a low background level that works for all my players. I know Discord has a plugin for Spotify, but I haven't really been able to figure it out without overtaking the video chat audio. I am also really new to Spotify in general and don't really know its ins-and-outs either.
If any of you have any suggestions to help with this, I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to continue using Discord as our main means of communication, even if like Skype had better background audio integration. I would be open to having a separate window open for just the audio as long as it was not too complicated for the players to figure out and didn't compromise the video chat audio as well.
Usually, you'd find a music bot and add it to the Discord server. This will allow you to play music via commands, example "!play dungeon music" and it will search Youtube for the string. Alternatively, you can enter in the full URLs instead. The bot will join your voice channel and stream the music. You can control the bot's volume, but everyone may still like to customize to their own preferences.
I appreciate this. Through your suggestion and a ton of internet searching, I figured out how to get a bot in the server. I'm becoming familiar with it and it seems like in general it'd be able to meet my needs. The only thing is that our game is through a Discord Direct Message, and I am not finding a way to be on a video call and be in a server at the same time. I also cannot seem to get the bot to work in a direct message alone either. I am thinking it may just not be possible to use discord for both things at once.
Hey! So, sorry for the super necro on this thread mods, but this is the first result for "Discord Bot D&D Music" so I wanted to reply here anyway.
Discord's group calls don't usually support bots and junk, but there's a way to get video in a server voice-chat room! This way you can have your video/voice chat, and have your bot.
1. Put your Discord Client into Developer Mode, video for that here.
2. Find your server ID by right clicking on your server icon, select Copy ID, and paste it into a work-space. I use Windows' sticky notes, but notepad or whatever.
3. Find the ID for the voice channel you want to use by right clicking it, and selecting Copy ID, paste it just like the one before.
4. Create a join link using this template: https:// discordapp.com/channels/serverID/channelID
5. Have your friends join the voice channel, then click the link. Your clients should all pop up with the in-client video chat you're used to in your private group calls, and you can still summon your music bot!
Note, your friends do not have to put their clients into dev mode for them to join. Hope this helps anyone who's curious about this in the future. Again, sorry for the necro. :)

Find one and play around a bit - they're free.
