Hello there! I'm hoping people can help me out with brainstorming some ideas for an upcoming story arc I'm planning. (If, somehow, one of my players happen to stumble across this, stop reading pls kthnx).
Here's a bit of background lore: The campaign is set in my own homebrew continent which I've slapped into the canon world Toril since at the time, creating an entire world myself was a bit much for me. The world lore is pretty much the same, however I put my own spin on it, in that way back at the beginning of things, ten good Gods and ten evil Gods, that I've named the Righteous Gods and Forsaken Gods, did battle because the Forsaken Gods wanted to destroy what was created, generally cause mishap etc, etc. The Forsaken Gods were banished to or retreated to their respected planes and realms.
Two years ago, Orcus cursed an NPC that my PCs have grown really close with, and now the curse is starting to take affect. Simply put, Orcus is stuck in Thanatos and is attempting to use ancient soul magic to put his soul into this NPC's body so that he can more or less ascend.
In order to stop Orcus from ascending successfully, the PCs need to collect at least 3 swords that belonged to Solars, that are blessed by the Righteous Gods they follow, and I want to put them through trials themed to the Gods so that it's not just an easy dungeon crawl. The three Gods are:
1. Torm, God of Courage 2. Silvanus, God of Wild Nature 3. Pelor, God of the Sun & Healing
My problem is that, unfortunately, I've hit quite a creative block with these trials, so I'm reaching out to see if anyone has any sort of ideas they could give me. Anything at all would be appreciated, and of course, feel free to ask questions if I haven't quite made something clear!
Torm sounds like leaps of faith and squaring up against a monster that looks immensely powerful beyond what the party can handle but actually isn't could be good approaches, also forcing the characters to face their fears in some way.
Silvanus probably suits a vast open expanse more than a confined dungeon, hunting and tracking could be involved, or some way of restricting the use of non natural equipment like metal weapons and armour (although that will hit some classes really hard and not others so possibly not) The party must achieve a goal while transformed into animals? (that is something I am thinking of for a side plot of my own)
Pelor... erm radiant damage?... preventing a plague of some kind, disposing of vampires? that is getting more into service than trials but might still fit with what you need.
I'm really loving your ideas, especially the Silvanus one. It never occurred to me to do an open-type dungeon so I was really struggling to think of a place for him. Hunting animals using the environment and natural equipment is something I'll definitely play around with I think.
As for Torm, I was suggested something similar with the fears, so I think that's what I'll go with for him. And yeah... Pelor's a bit of a tricky one, but I shall see what I can do.
Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated!
