Core: DM'ed for a few years, about to build a new world for a new party of experienced players. one catch: it requires a 8-hour one-shot appetizer.
I have been playing with the following:
"The herald stands on the village's central square "Hear Hear! The [insert leg. party name] have failed! The portal to the abyss has been opened, by Royal decree you all shall be evacuated behind the Ammitude Mountainrage, which shall be closed off in precisely three days. They are coming, may the light protect us."
What if the battle against evil has already failed, and abyssal hordes are flooding the world. Obviously with circles of magi, paladins, clerics and armies the worlds wouldn't simply stop to exist. I imagine, all forces would find a strategically advantageous point to defend to try and contain the evil. I imagine it as if the portal is opened inside "fantasy Switzerland". For those who do not know: Switzerland could block all Alps' mountain passes in case of huge Calamity.
The parties mission would be to find a way to put an end to the portal/enemies and gain the lvl's and items required, maybe even track down dead/fled members of the failing leg party to recover Vestiges and items they had already recovered to stand against the big baddie.
In a world like this: What would you guys find important aspects in the world to flavor it up big-time?
We are talking: a recently abandoned countryside swarmed with demonic forces and huge masses of people stuck in a small defendable space. How would the defenses work? What would the unlikely allies be in this fight? what are low-level quests and instances that can be played out before they are ready to confront real demons? and finally:
I intend the one-shot to possible start at the herald and end making to to the mountain range (3 days game-time, 8 hours real-time). Eager to hear your thoughts, have you run campaigns like this? Let's have some fun!
