TL;dr - how would you handle a Way of Tranquility Monk attempting to foster some degree of peace with Chaotic Evil creatures such as Orcs, Goblins, white dragon, etc. Primarily between those creatures and locally living "good" creatures (Humans, Dwarves, Elves...) (a short term relationship between them and the adventurers I feel comfortable with).
I am a new DM, and honestly still new to D&D - still playing in my first adventure (did a few Adventure League events as well) that is based off of the Starter set with a group of friends. With another group (several of whom have not played before) I am starting a game based off the Essentials set. I did not like the fact that the adventure in the Essentials Kit didn't really connect any of the players to the story (and the "quest board"). So I had a quasi "Day 0" to initially get with the players to partially design their characters so that I can rewrite parts of the story to include the characters (and change how they get the quests themselves to talking to NPCs).
While I am primarily following the Essentials Adventure I did allow the players to use the PHB (and some extension to UA for this character). One player asked about playing a Monk and was interested in the Way of Tranquility - both for healing and the concept of being able to find other solutions to combat. This brought up a new issue for me - is it possible to create some sort of "peaceful" relationship with chaotic evil? Primarily a "long term" peace primarily with the town.
Some of my initial thoughts are:
I need to create a further backstory for each type of enemy - are they part of a clan? are they a small group? do they have a direct leader? What is the goal of the individual "group(s)" they encounter?
If I use a clan, make the existing Leader more warlike but have a secondary NPC who is open to the concept of peaceful relationship. (so depending upon the interaction the players have they might discover this other NPC and dispose of the warlike leader. If individuals they can try to deal with them a bit more 1:1.
Leave some of the results up to chance - a clan might agree to a "peaceful" decision only to attack the main party later. Or they continue to be an issue to townsfolk. Or it might "splinter" and have two groups (based upon a roll).
But I am hoping to hear how others would handle a Monk attempting to foster some sort of long term "peace" between creatures that are normally considered Chaotic Evil and a town of Good/Neutral/Lawful? Realistically though if there isn't a logical way within the lore to create this sort of accord then, at least for this Adventure, the player has said they would choose a different class or Monastic way.
And yes I understand that he would also need to convince the Humans/Elves/Dwarves/etc... to accept whatever accord he concocts as well, but I can more easily understand how to deal with Neutral/Good leaning races.
As a side: the Monk is half elf (wood elf). The backstory was going to be that the Monastery was sending this Monk out to attempt to foster peace in the area that the White Dragon was causing chaos in. The monk either has extensive language knowledge or access to a spell/ability (something like Awakened Mind Warlock ability) to aid him in communication.
(Some of my thoughts on how a group "could" deal with it is to have Orcs who work as guards for the town/caravans. Goblins could be given construction jobs, etc...obviously I have no idea what the player(s) might come up with. Trying to mentally wrap my brain around how to handle "chaotic evil" when presented with options that might be outside of the normal for them).
