One of my players is possessed by Orcus, a demon lord of the Abyss. I told the player that their character has to make Charisma saves whenever he tries to take over. Note that this character is a tiefling sorcerer who gains power from Orcus, not that she knows it's him possessing her. I want to know how exactly could I make the progression of the possession worse? What would give Orcus enough power to take over?
It depends a lot on what you want out of the plot, but you'd expect Orcus to both favor and be strengthened by actions consistent with his aspects, such as slaying the living (particularly with necromancy) and raising the dead. You might set it up with a bribe of some sort -- for example, 'When you cast a necromancy spell, you reduce the sorcery point cost of metamagic by 1 (to a minimum of zero) but must make a roll to resist corruption'.
