My brother and I are trying to teach our little brother to DM and are having him do LMoP. We were thinking about doing it with just two characters (one each),and are not completely sure how to start. 2nd level, a magic item, and an extra feat of our choice? Start on third level? If you have any suggestions, please tell me!
Edit: Note, I have no control over the difficulty of the adventure.
I've run it with two we just started at level 1 but each player controlled 2 PCs. Made the RP aspect a little more cumbersome but overall it worked pretty well. Plus added bonus each player got to try out two classes as opposed to 1.
Pretty straight forward really just have each of your players use 2 PCs. In our case one player had a rogue and a wizard, the other had a fighter and cleric. Again it made the role play aspect a little different but it worked ok.
Lost Mines are ripe with potentially playable NPCS. You have Gundren and Sildar for starts (our DM gave them to us to use during a few sessions where our group of 6 players dipped to only 2). Use any of the few 'faction' characters in the town. Forgot all their names. The druid would be nice (great support class). Or just make some up.
Don't forget that the Essential kit literally gives sidekicks to use. It may be easier and less complicated to use one of the sidekicks and would allow the players to focus on THEIR character.

"The hero sought to save the world.
"If I keep trying, I'll be able to win," the hero thought.
But the harder the hero fought, the further the world seemed to tumble away.
Drowning in doubt, the hero could not even save themselves.
Hero, if you still believe in a brighter future, hold in your heart a thorn that can pierce all doubt."

Well, nevermind. Got it all figured out now.

How did you do it? Curious because I'm looking to do the same with 2 players.
