Hello fellow DM's! Need a few ideas to throw into my next large mission. The current idea is that the players have been given a job by there God to assist another kingdom in a upcoming war. They will travel ahead of the main armies to get the capital that will be attacked. They have two months inside the kingdom to do what they need to do. The idea is that they will have to disrupt the war effort in the city in order to break the "enemy" armies before the attack begins. But I want to have it so that there is a war effort meter if you will. Example if they poison the water well that may make the war effort swing against them as the people of the city will rise against the subterfuge. I need ideas for what they could do/shouldn't do. The era is steam engines and black powder pistols are readily able to be purchased and/or used. Being with that said they have one months inside of the city to make the war effort go down to nothing to allow the armies they work for too walk right in. Please help me out fellow DM's!!! Also they don't know it but they get to rid and control a Dragon Engine if they succeed! ( steam powered mechanical dragon)
If I need to clarify some things for you guys to give me some better help please let me know!
It sound like they should attack the stores of black powder. Likely the city stores them in multiple locations. One night of explosives would cripple the cannons. That would greatly allow the army to charge the walls without being shredded. Next is to work on weakening the main gates. Figure out how to open them when needed. This will allow the army to come in when they arrive.
The trouble is timing. If they do it too soon, the city could recover. Too late, they might face increase security, especially if the city thinks there are saboteurs inside. Anything they do that might draw attention to them should make things harder.
I'd agree the powder stores are the most obvious high value target, but if poisoning the water will get them a direct negative reaction I imagine blowing stuff up on a grand scale will get all sorts of reaction...
I'd also point out the phrase "keep your powder dry" is from the black powder era (iirc) and rendering large amounts of the powder supply useless at the critical moment will have the desired effect without having an immediate counter-initiative against the infiltrators.
So far these ideas are gold gentlemen, thank you. Ive been working on this mission for a few months now as I want to cover all my bases. My playgroup is a rather crafty group of a-holes. I didn't think once of the gates or even wetting the powder stores.. which is brilliant I might add!
