I'm a very new Dungeon Master, as in only ran 1 one-shot campaign before. We just had our first session of Lost Mines of Phandelver last week and it was amazing, everyone was laughing and having tons of fun. However, our next session is in two days and one of the players isn't able to come. She is the most outgoing one of the group of 4 players. The other players don't know each other but her personality is such that it didn't matter that no one else knew each other and everyone had fun. Now that she's not coming, I'm not sure how all of them will interact with each other. The remaining 3 are very introverted and low energy I want D&D to be a fun experience, and I want them to be able to get to know each other and not have it be awkward. Right now they've just entered Cragmaw Castle but I was thinking about adding a room or something that forces them to collaborate with each other not just me. What do you guys think about this?
Don't worry about it. You'll be fine and the game will run fine. You do you and let them be them. If you think it's slowing down then have an outrageous npc that they talk to and you get them moving forward..
Agreed, it won’t be fun for them if they feel dragged into being more outgoing than they are. An NPC that asks direct questions of each of them is the surest way to get them speaking in character. Another thing I like to do during downtime is ask ‘what is your character doing to pass the time on the road/around the campfire/while drinking in the tavern?’ It forces them to give a quick insight into who their character is in their head even if they aren’t comfortable verbalizing it in other more energetic ways.
