I have a problem, I'm kinda new to 5e and I am having some trouble with making attacks, especially some of the Home Brew weapons.
Last session we had a situation where 3 characters had to take out 2 NPCs that were guarding an entrance. They had to attempt to take out both guards at once without alerting the others 4. Ok, the characters had no weapons except for one of them. She has darts that she shoots out from her fingertips as a natural defense but she can use them for an attack. Here's the problem. She was able to extract two darts and give them to the other two characters. They made an improvised blowgun from bamboo sticks to fire the darts. They had to both fire at once and hit both guards at the same time to knock them out (the darts only knock out a target temporarily) . My question is , how do I make the attack roll for this. If the darts are fired by the one character that is proficient with them ,the range is 100 ft. But how do I determine the proficiency for the other two characters, and how do I make the attack roll? I am very confused. The characters are 30 ft away from the targets. What is the proficiency for each character?
If a character is not proficient with an attack, they do not gain their proficiency bonus to their attack roll. The Attack Roll would be modified by only their Dexterity modifier in this case.
You roll a d20 and add whatever modifiers to that number rolled (for an average melee attack with a proficient weapon this would be strength modifier and proficiency bonus). The rolled number (including those modifiers) is compared to the target's Armor Class. If the result of the Attack Roll is equal or greater than the target's Armor Class, the attack hits.
To make an attack roll, the person making the attack rolls a d20 to first see if the attack hits. The character adds their attack stat modifier (strength for most melee weapons, dexterity for most ranged weapons, casting stat for magic classes), and then, if the character is proficient with the weapon or spell, they also add their proficiency bonus.
If the number they roll+their stat modifier+their proficiency bonus is equal to or greater than the target's Armor Class (AC), then the attack hits.
If it hits, they roll damage. Most weapons have different damage dice, but you can easily look up the dice to use for any weapon. If the attack is with a weapon, then your character should add their STAT MODIFYER to the damage roll, but the proficiency bonus is NOT added to damage.
So, let's say we have a LV 2 character attacking with a longsword (1 handed, so damage is a d8), and they have 16 strength, and the enemy's AC is 13.
Let's assume they roll a 10, so that's 10+3(strength mod)+2(prof bonus)=15
Their attack hits. Then they roll a d8+3(STR mod again). Let's say they rolled a 4. The attack deals 7 damage.

How do you actually make an attack roll? I can't get anything out of the PHB that makes any sense.
