I recently developed a few changes to goblinoids and drow in order to shore up some design weaknesses I experienced while using them in a campaign. I thought it would be nice to share them and maybe learn how many other DM's out there felt they had to make similar tweaks.
One of the biggest problems I had was with the hobgoblin. With a AC of 18 and an extra 2d6 damage when in melee they were way above their CR of 1/2. Also the MM hobgoblin is equipped with chainmail, shield, longsword and longbow which makes them a variable shower of gold pieces when killed and looted (150gp!). In addition, a standard hobgoblin carries a longbow and a shield which makes their AC change depending on what weapon they are using. A tracking nightmare for DM's using more than one or two hobgoblins.
For the drow I wanted to make them more vicious and scary. The CR 1/4 drow was just not intimidating or worthy of how I imagine the drow's reputation to be. So I beefed up their hp, gave them some sneaky abilities, and what amounts to a watered down crossbow expert feat. Let me say 'mission accomplished'! Drow in my campaign once again have a intimidation factor.
So what about you? Any DM's out there who could share some tweaks they felt needed to be made to existing monsters?
