So I have a dilemma to face with the Cog of Blood in the 5th Level of the Tomb of the Nine Gods: the indestructible portcullis in that area is only supposed to open when all creatures released from the five wardrobes are defeated. However, the AC and HP of the wardrobes are also given because hack and slash is always not too far from the top of a player's list of options. What should be done if a wardrobe is destroyed before the creatures are released from it?
Off the top of my head, I see a few possible outcomes:
The red crystal doesn't light up and the portcullis remains closed even if all the other wardrobes are dealt with. "You went full barbarian. Never go full barbarian." (As the room resets after 24 hours, it is possible the wardrobe could return if the party wanted to wait around that long.)
The wardrobe isn't a magical item, it just has the portal inside it, so as soon as they break the wardrobe down, the creatures pour out of the portal contained within, even if the heroes are dealing with another wardrobe's monsters.
The red crystal lights up and the heroes have found a way to circumvent killing an innocent monodrone.
Am I missing something in the text, or is it merely open to interpretation? Even if I'm missing something, what do you think the best way to go about it would be, and what other options could there be? I've also heard of DMs changing what comes out of the wardrobes and ways to overcome each one, to either increase the CR of the fights or to allow for more roleplaying. Thoughts?
