Despite your low intelligence modifier you roll....another natural 20!
your insight tells you the candle makers word of warning was a cipher and a red herring to draw your focus away from the tiles and to the candles. It is not a clue to where you need to place the tiles
you roll a persuasion check...natural twenty!! ... you convince others of your theory and then despite being unprompted by me roll another natural twenty in acrobatics and do a standing flip for no real reason
In terms of play testing, I think once we get to the grinding out trial-and-error part, what we're seeing here is what you're going to see at the table. This part might be too fiddly to maintain interest.
Yeah so all 5 have to be right to unlock it, so when you get the first answer you should go “ okay so those three are right, just need to figure out the other two”

I pull out a book and have a sit down, being stumped other than trying all different tile combinations. :D
All posts come with the caveat that I don't know what I'm talking about.
At this point it’s master mind you know what 3 are and it’s about getting the other 2
? + air + ? = lit candle
? + ? + water = unlit candle
Water + ? + time = mist candle
Time + ? + air = smelly candle
Air + Time + water = Tide - sea candle
I imagine this bit will be easier with visuals you can move around
Time + Fear + Air = Death Smelly candle
[Just stabbing in the dark... da dum tish]

If you think about the lit candle rather than the smelly one ;)
air + ? + ? = fire
Was hopping someone else might jump in and help :D
Air + Wood + Heat = lit
Water + Heat + Time = mist

The thing I am hoping for is they work out one it gives them a lot of detail about the others
so
air + heat + wood = fire
Air + wood + time = rot
wood + water + heat = smoke
water + heat + time = steam
water + Air + time = tide
As soon as you work out one you get feedback that locks 3 in place
goes from 35k combinations to 42, but you get the next and it’s 6 left
What do you mean "locks in place" does it have to be in order, and that is why the tide didn't stay green?
