Just because they roll high on every investigation check, doesn't mean they're always finding sacks of gold and potions. It just means they find everything in a given chest/crate/dead guy's pockets that's there. Rolling a nat 20 doesn't mean there's a magic dagger and a puppy in any givem crate, so don't feel the need to throw stuff in there that isn't.
If you're going from the published book, then most of the prediscribed loot and findings are calculated to give the players enough to continue forward and become as strong as they need to be to face more challenges. However, if they're having a hard go of it, or even of they're just roleplaying really well and deserve an award in your eyes, then you can sprinkle whatever goodies in there you want to. Whatever makes it fun and intresting, or even more challenging if you wanna curve ball them with a couple cursed items. You decide.
As to buying potions, I think the player's handbook has them priced at 50gp. Make only a small handful available based on location (small villages probably don't make or stock them, where as large cities used to adventurers would have them ready) and remember that they take time for your NPC's to restock/craft. They are magic after all.

Well, if I haven't already determined that there isn't. . .

As a pretty new dm, i have a question regarding handing out potions.
can players search every crate, or room they come accross and find things on good rolls? How many potions can they buy/find? To make it fun but fair?
We are playing through Tyranny of Dragons, should i stick to the item hand outs or add my own loot here an there?
Any help?
