Last session they encountered their first anchorite of talos. The rogue now has clawed gauntlets and I'm waiting to see how long until this backfires too XD

From the creature star block list:
Bite (Rat or Hybrid Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage. If the target is a humanoid, it must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or be cursed with wererat lycanthropy.
My only guess is that it's like that to give new players a taste of what a lycanthrope is, but I'm doubtful.
Ah I get it, every lycanthrope passes the curse on like that, but wererats don't like to pass it on unless they are inviting people to their guild/pack, so they wouldn't actually bite in combat with people they don't want to turn, instead using their weapons.
Depening on your adventure style, if they contract lycanthropy you could use the following: when ever they touch silver ask for a Cons Savign Throw (DC10 +1 per lb of weight or fraction there of). Succeed on the save they feel their hand burn and drop the silver but no other effect, fail they save they drop the silver and take 1hp of damage, roll a natural 1 and they take 1d4 damage and drop the silver in some dramatic fashion (yelp of pain, small amount of smoke rising from their palm etc).
This might not seem a lot but if you start putting out treasue in silver pieces as well as gold, have trinkets and magical items (ring, amulets etc) made from silver then players might decide the Lycanthropy is not worth it and just think of the faux par of being invited to the Nobles mansion for dinner to find the cutlery is silver.

It's like that because it's the default stat block. The intent is that the players think of it as a bad thing, but the game mechanics for making it feel like a curse are lacking.
