so we are playing a high magic campaign and my player wanted to see if he could bind the energys of an elemenal to himself after saying it would be very hard and potentially deadly we agreed on a 4part ritual and (even though I thinking he hacked roll20 with the rolls lol) he rolled nat 20 on all but 1 and rolled a 19 on that and with his +9 to arcana I couldn't find a reason to say no.
My question is what would be a fair and fitting reward for him. he is not a power gamer and has made many sub optimal choices in building his character so he could stick to RP. And in doing so he is nearly the weakest player in battle so I was hopping to give him a good reward for that
Depending on the kind of elemental, you could give him resistance to whatever element it is.
If they're a melee type, let them add a couple dice of their element's damage (maybe 2d6) to their weapon rolls (like a flame tongue, but with whichever element, and they can apply it to whatever weapon they are using).
If they're a caster, let them change the damage type of any of their spells to their bound element (or keep the original, their choice). And if the spell is already that element bump up the damage (either add die, or increase die size by one, maybe)
Give them an attack like the dragonborn breath weapon, but maybe up the damage (or make it a bonus action) so it doesn't suck.
If the campaign is higher level I’d be tempted to give him the abilities that he would get if he was wearing a Ring of Elemental Command of whichever element he bound into himself.
Taking the fact you created a difficult 4 part ritual and the character seems to have Aced it, why not just have ability to call a free Conjure Elemental or something similar once per long rest (or week)? Not super overly awesome by itself but likely to swing the tides quite favorably when needed

Perhaps he could have a limited form of the ability a circle of moon druid has to shapeshift into an elemental?
Or a single spell from each element that he can use once per day? Such as fireball / lightning bolt / erupting earth / and.... a water one
Depends on the elemental, but this is what I'd do.
Air
Gust, increased movement speed, and either wind wall, gaseous form, or fly once per day
Earth
Mold earth, increased ac, and either erupting earth or meld into stone once per day
Fire
Control flames, fire resistance, and fireball once per day
Water
Control water, cold resistance, and either water walk, water breathing, or wall of water once per day
