So my weekly game just finished and the party's Necromancer decided he wanted to make an amputated hand into his pet ( Like Thing from the Adams Family). He asked if it was possible to do so and I have no idea if it can. So my question is How would that work? I would assume he can just use Raise dead or Animate dead to make it move but can it work the way he wants?
Going by the straight rules of the spells this, in my opinion, would not work. However it is a pretty awesome idea and ultimately it's your choice as DM on whether it works in the world.
I think this would be a TON of fun for the player. I would probably make this something the necromancer would have to do over time hours, days, weeks to fully "train" it using ability checks to determine the effectiveness of their work. With multiple failures resulting in the hand being completely destroyed, but this wouldn't mean they couldn't try again. I would use blindsight rules for vision.
Some care needs to be taken and you may need to adjust along the way. Some players can get carried away and soon you may have an army of walking hands and hopping legs, or heads sewn onto legs.
I would find out what the player is looking to do with it. You may need to discuss rules on how it can be used. IE: bonus action to command it to do something during combat, can it even be used during combat, if he wants to lift certain things how much could it lift, has to roll for stealth, so on and so forth. How do the hand and necromancer communicate? All of those do not need to be hammered out all at once, but as they come up decide what to do in that moment and make a final ruling after that session.
I can't see the link either, but that may give a good baseline for stats.
I would go for it and have some fun.
