Currently running LMoP and approaching Act 3 (party is nearing Cragmaw Castle) and have started thinking about what factions would invite which party members. Zhentarim would invite the sneaky rogue and the mercenary fighter, Emerald Enclave would invite the druid and Order of the Gauntlet would invite the monk. I got two questions here:
1. Do factions matter/Are they worth it or is it just unnecessary hassle? There's zero guidance on faction stuff in LMoP besides inviting members so don't know anything about what part they will play later on
2. If I do go ahead with this, is having party members from 3 different factions a bit too crazy and conflicting or can it work?
The factions don't really come up in LMoP, but it could be a factor in future games, especially if you run them through other campaign books. That said the factions are kind of deliberately loose so that having a mix of factions in a single group shouldn't create a serious problem.
The most useful thing I've found with playing with a group that mostly joined the Harpers in LMoP was that, when I started a new campaign, I could easily explain the characters being sent to take on new adventures by just having other Harpers request aid or essentially put them on assignment. It saves a lot of time in setup to just have the party be part of some kind of "adventuring guild" to justify them going on whatever wild adventure you can think of.
Hello, Level 1 DM here,
Currently running LMoP and approaching Act 3 (party is nearing Cragmaw Castle) and have started thinking about what factions would invite which party members. Zhentarim would invite the sneaky rogue and the mercenary fighter, Emerald Enclave would invite the druid and Order of the Gauntlet would invite the monk. I got two questions here:

2. If I do go ahead with this, is having party members from 3 different factions a bit too crazy and conflicting or can it work?
Thanks in advance!

I didn't bother with them. The plot is very straight forward and no need to mess with them unless you plan on using them in the future.
