I'm a new DM who is planning my first campaign, and part of my plan involves my players collecting the elemental gemstones. I was wondering if there was some way I could design a mechanic that would allow for my players to fight the elementals and capture them in the gemstones, to make the quest more dangerous (kind of Pokemon Style I guess). Because I'm new to DMing and haven't played much D&D as a player yet either, I don't have enough of a grasp on the mechanics to know how to allow my players to do that. Is there a spell or item I could adapt as a tool for this? Or any other more creative solutions (I'd love to do something different for each elemental so it doesn't get too repetitive.)
You could have different gemstones be found in different environments. Maybe different stones can trap different elemental types, and part of the quests involve finding caches of stones.
Maybe once the got an elemental down to half hp, they can try to trap them. Make it a touch effect. That would mean risking burns to catch a fire elemental, or maybe having to get off the ground for air, perhaps an earth elemental would dive in the ground and they have to dig it up, etc.
