I have a non-magic user who has collected the finger bones of a hill giant.
As a down-time activity they would like to have a magic item crafted out of these finger bones. I'm trying to figure out how to run this for them.
If they were a wizard I'd just have them spend the week and pay the gold as listed, since they've already defeated the CR5 creature, and obtain an uncommon magic item with a strength property, right?
Should I have them pay extra to have a local wizard do this for them? Randomize the property? Make it take longer? Ideas?
By RAW, there is no class requirement for creating a magic item. Assuming you are using the rules in XGtE the characters just need knowhow, money, time, ingredients and the proper tool proficiency. If they’ve got all that, and if you’re the DM, and you want to allow it, just go ahead and allow it. Honestly, if you’re the DM and you want to allow it, that’s all they need, even if they don’t have the stuff in Xanathar’s, you can just go ahead and let them craft whatever you like. Also, you can decide you want it harder than the book says and that you want them to have a wizard involved, it’s your world. You could consider the wizard’s fee part of the recommended cost, or add on some extra cost of you want. Whatever fits your world and how much magic is in it.

Oh that makes sense. Thanks :)
