My BBEG idea is essentially a soul with no body who can posses other people and is plotting to end the world. The big feature that he can't be killed in normal ways since when the body he controls dies he simply possesses a new body. I have a plan for giving the PCs options to kill him for good, but I was wondering if you guys could provide some pre-emptive troubleshooting help to brainstorm some problems associated with that idea
I have toyed with a similar idea, where the BBEG is bound to a sword. Whoever wields the sword swaps souls with the BBEG - thus the BBEG is whoever is holding the sword.
So if the BBEG is an old man, and they are disarmed and a player picks up the sword, the player's soul moves to the old mans body and the BBEG steals their body. The player keeps their skills but has the old mans stats until they can find a way to get their body back. It's going to require a bit of careful design to prevent it from ruining someone's game, mind you!
Isn't that the plot from an old Drizzt novel, with a BBEG that possess other creatures? It was tied to a magic item if I remember it right, that might be a solution to defeat it?
Perhaps I was not clear enough, the BBEG never had a physical form. They are from another world and was brought here by accident. I was just wondering if there were any exploits of this mechanically that I hadn't thought of yet that I could get ahead of.

A lich who uses magic jar and maybe some homebrew abilities would work.

This is basically a bad guy who invented a slightly better Magic Jar.
Read the Harry Potter books. Horacrux and all that

Try watching the movie Fallen (with Denzel Washington) for inspiration...
