I'm currently running Storm King's Thunder, and am looking for some out-of-the-box ideas for my next session.
My PCs are currently in Kryptgarden, searching for Ol' Gnawbones, who they hope will help them understand the significance of the Nightstone (from session 1). They've run aground of a lot of typical swamp/forest encounters: quicksand, crossing bogs, killer vines, and a group of treants angry that the PCs hacked their way through thick growth in order to enter the swamp. A coven of hags is luring them deeper and deeper into the swamp and away from their objective. They've found three odd and terrifying fetish dolls (think Blair Witch) hanging near strange piles of bone, and they serve as proxies for the Hag's Eye -the Hags can each spy through these dolls. PCs have picked up two of them (green hag and sea hag) and opted to leave the third (night hag) hanging from a mangrove limb. The night hag has visited each of party members while they sleep, giving them nightmares of their worst fears.
They will encounter the coven within the next session.
I'm a little tired of steering them through the swamp with the usual overland encounter stuff, but don't want to rush through this portion of the campaign, as the denoument of meeting Ol' Gnawbones will catapult them into the main storyline. Any ideas for tactics, puzzles, etc. that could add some serious stakes and terror to this?
