My level 13 party has just gained several high ranking winter court archfey allies on their adventure to the Feywilds including. As a parting gift of thanks before being sent back to their home plane, the Queen and Archfey presented them each a present. It was pretty easy to come up with ideas for all but one of the party members, hexblade warlock. But I had her present him an obsidian and icy marbled spyglass, idk why, but after struggling, that's what I came up with in the moment. So now I gotta figure out some kind of powers for it, fitting level 13 and a gift presented by the queen of the winter court and other winter court archfey.
Now, he likes to talk...a lot, but doesn't say much if you get my drift and tends to ramble on for a while. He also decided to ask her to give them items before they left (something that she was going to do regardless, but he decided to take the initiative and request "a reward" of sorts) The way I have her personality, she is pretty cutting and cold, so I do imagine she took some offense to the begging and demands and being forced to listen to a long speech, so I'd like for it to be useful, but also be a bit "backhanded" in its abilities.
My initial thoughts for the usage of this item is more utility, he doesn't need to deal any more damage than he already does compared to the rest of the party. So I was thinking it allows the user to:
Allows them to see beyond what's visible. Like a more advanced true sight, or wizards sight from dresden files.
So it could allow the user to see an aura of threat around whatever it peers at for a single use. The greater the aura, the greater the threat that individual/location poses to the attuned user
Allow the use of a dunamancy spell, kind of like the spygalss gives foresight in a way, allowing you to get some kind of advantage or redo of a roll in the future. Just a 1/day use of Fortunes Favor.
Neither of these are really wowing me, maybe a combination of the two or something entirely different. I do want to add a bit of mischief into the item as well, just as a parting gift from the queen.
I would greatly appreciate some ideas or suggestions. Thanks
EDIT:
This is what I currently have picked out for the item:
Spyglass of Recollection (requires attunement)
The spyglass can pierce through heavily obsucred areas as if they were lightly obscured, and lightly obscured areas as if they were unobscured. In darkness you can see as if it was dim light out to 1000ft. and beyond in greyscale
The spyglass has 3 charges You can expend 1 charge and specify a time in the past you would like to see. You view the area around you for 1 minute at that specified time. After the charges are lost, the spyglass loses this ability for recollection.
Curse: You become increasingly determined to accrue materiel wealth, anyway you can from everyone you can. Everything you see appears as stacks of coins and gems. People feel an aura from you and instantly clutch their coin purses in your presence. You have disadvantage on rolls involved with purchasing and selling. The attunement can be removed by via remove curse, however the curse can not be removed until the individual performs an act of generosity.
Does this feel like a useful and powerful enough item, but with an insulting enough curse from an archfey that didn't appreciate greediness? Any changes or edits would be greatly appreciated.
If she doesn't like his impertinence for asking for gifts, then the spyglass could be magically indestructible, and that is all.
She gave him a reward, which is what he asked for.
If you want it to be more useful, if the party are an investigative lot, then peering into the past to see what the most significant emotional event happened in the location in the past. It sees the remnants of the strong emotions that still linger. So it won't always show the PCs what they want to see, if there was a stronger emotional event that happened in the same place.
Since he was greedy, then when he looks at items through the spyglass he can see the value of the item - with stacks of gold coins being superimposed on the item being viewed. Perhaps the image is in grey-scale, so it actually shows the copper value, but the PC might interpret it as the gold value?
Perhaps it grants truesight but, being a spyglass, only works at long ranges of over half a mile - it won't focus close up.
I like the idea of it revealing the worst thing that the person has ever done. That could have some laughs where a goody two-shoes (yeah, look at that sod with their normal quantity of shoes!) is revealed to be a murderer, or some rough & tumble hard guy at the bar reveals the worst thing he ever did was step on a dogs tail and immediately apologize profusely!

As much as I'd love to do something like that, I feel like it would only create tension for the rest of the party to get pretty cool and powered up items and I just give him a spyglass of attunement. It's what he deserves and the Queen is pretty cutting and catty, so it's not out of the question.

I think I'll definitely add a curse onto it, something that forces him to come face to face with his insult to her by asking for gifts rather than waiting. But I want it to be more aggressive than just this. He will definitely just see everything in gold piles rather than color, which I think is fitting. Maybe he'd have disadvantage on any kind of charisma checks to buy things? I also want to make him want to steal things or become super greedy. Which could be an interesting addition on top of the other effects.
I just can't think of what I want the actual utility part of the item to be. Emotional history is cool, but I don't think he'll bite, I also don't think they'll do anything but create conflict if I let them see the crimes of a person's past. Partly because of trying to blackmail other people or because he'd try and pull some scheme on his fellow party members. What do you guys think?
hmm... One thing I have designed for my magic shop is a portable spyhole which effectively creates a cylinder of invisibility behind itself, the depth of which can be adjusted by twisting it. When you look through, you can see through everything. However, if you set it to 3 feet deep and look through a 1 inch door, you might be looking through someone leaning on the other side of the door!
You could also have a small eye on the side of the spyglass which proves to be removable. When you look through the spyglass, you see through the eye. So you can have a CCTV camera kind of thing.
you could make the spyglass have truesight, but it only works in dim or no light, that way it only becomes useful inside dark areas, which are normally more compact.
What if it was a talking spyglass, eye for an eye as punishment for talking out of turn. So one hand it can be a really good item but it tends to talk about everything it gets used to look at. Maybe once per dawn it can be used to tell the player the weaknesses of a creature but it does it in a longwinded way.

And so, if you need to fight while holding the spyglass, you are still at disadvantage on the attack :)
Have the spy glass show glimpses of the future, some come true, some not. Anthing that happens to an object comes true but with people it is inaccurate. I look at an apple tree, see apple fall. tomorrow the party sees the apple fall (actually). They look at a guy having a beer at the bar, see the guy leave and rob an old woman walking down the street. Tomorrow they see the old woman walking down the street, they see the guy but the guy does not rob the old woman, but actually helps her with directions.
One, the party may beat up guy to rescue the old woman thinking he is going to rob. Then build the drrama up, maybe the king gets assassinated is a vision they see, by a friendly ally.
I'm currently most concerned about whether the curse is good enough and something that seems interesting but troublesome. If not, some improvements to the downside of the item would be helpful

A curse doesn't always have to reveal itself all at once.
If your first curse doesn't seem to have enough of an impact then turn it up a notch :)

This is Fey. Make it powerful, divination, worthless to an adventurer, that will seem to be useful but get you into fights.
When you look through a spyglass at a person it shows visions of the worst thing the target has ever done.
... Or could ever do :)
... Oops, I read the original idea wrong. Maybe show visions of the worst thing that you could do to the target :)
