The above link leads to a Pastebin of the entire run down of the idea I have for a Deathknight stand alone class or it could be an Oath of Death Paladin if taken as a subclass type deal. The idea being that the character (if it starts as a Paladin) in destroying its holy relic and forsaking its previous religious ties, sacrifices their levels of Paladin and instead takes on the Deathknight class and runs with that class without being able to multiclass. If the Deathknight winds up being its own class it takes it from level 1 as simply a Deathknight, however the backstory of the character has to be something along the lines of their town/family/dog/turtle/whatever was risen from the dead or had their life extended unnaturally and they find it to be in every way, shape, and form, disgusting. The spell list is at the bottom of the paste bin write up, and I will move the spell "Burial Rites" from under the Spell casting at 2nd level area, to where it belongs at the bottom under the 5th level spells later on. However, I wanted to get other peoples thoughts on the write up before I try to submit it for approval, as having as many opinions on whether it is balanced and playable, is ideal. Hope everyone has a bit of time for a read! TIA
Some people might be wary to click on an unfamiliar external link. You may want to paste the relevant game mechanic text in here. At least the important parts. I'm not sure I understand the basic premise of the class from your summary. What fantasy niche is this meant to fill? Both in lore and mechanically in the game? Why do you feel a class is preferable to just making it a Paladin Oath?
I feel like Paladins are supposed to be holy paragons that try to extend life even when fate/death comes knocking. As a class specifically, with the understanding that it could be either a subclass or its own class it would depend on the opinion of whether it gets accepted. I believe, however, that it could be either. As far as in terms of lore it would go to the character being disgusted by the thought of unnaturally extended life beyond what fate/death wants; but that doesn't mean they wouldn't heal a party member or npc or cow whatever if death/fate didn't want that particular life right then. When talking about it as a subclass or an oath the lie could be the same and just disgust with someone close to them being raised or becomes a lich and therefore is the big bad. I suppose the niche it is meant to fulfill would be those who enjoy the casting melee character without the need to be "good" but also want to wear heavy armor without needing to dip.
