So Im attempting to make a versatile (metaphorical, not game property) needle weapon, both for flavor and to make a thrown weapon ranger more feasible. Basically, its going to be just a dart, but it can be used as a dagger. So 1d4 Piercing, but it can be thrown (20/60) as a ranged weapon, and as a melee weapon dealing the same damage, you are proficient in, instead of how darts only count as improvised weapons when used in melee. Is this too OP?
Well, there's the Blowgun and Blowgun Needles. These needles are very lightweight (set of 50 is 1 lb) and do 1 Piercing damage. The Blowgun has a shorter range (25/100) than a similar concept of ammunition weapon, the Sling (30/120), so perhaps have a slighter shorter range than darts, maybe (15/50).
Your needles could be closer to darts in weight, but using 1 Piercing damage instead of 1d4 balances it out a bit in terms of making them possible to use in melee, if they're also finesse weapons. The actual damage would be 1 + STR/DEX of course.
A Rogue would still get great use out of these things with Sneak Attack, and a Monk (if using Needles as a dedicated weapon) would be able to roll martial arts dice for damage.
(I'm also imagining Pixies armed with these :D )

sounds like you want to flavor your daggers to look a specific way. you aren't changing the function of the dagger at all.
