On a thread about Darksun I got to thinking about if 5.5 was to introduce a Psionics class (they won't, but I can dream), and how they could do it with as few rules changes as possible.
First, the set up: Psionic Subclasses stay as they are. Psi-Warrior is a subclass just like how Eldritch Knight is a Subclass. Also, all psionic spells unless granted by a subclass are taken off normal spell lists. That's it.
Second, make the class: Take Warlock, make them care about Intelligence, scrub off the third level Boon, and add an ASI to levels 3 and 15... and give them Psychic spells and the rules baggage about not needing Verbal nor Somatic Components, and how spells like Dispel Magic, Counterspell, and Anti-Magic Sphere don't work because they aren't technically spells. That's it.
You get 3 new lines of rules for them (almost no new complexity creep to speak of, which was the Psionics main problem). Everything else is already in the game, and it's as similar to the Warlock as the Cleric is to the Druid, or the Sorcerer is to the Wizard.
Various Subclasses: The one that focuses on divination. The one that focuses on Mage Hand. The one that focuses on telepathy and social encounters. The one that focuses on enchantment. The one that focuses on skills and healing. The one that focuses on being half-monk. The one that focuses on exploration and teleportation. The one that focuses on tools and is half-artificer. The one that focuses on Cthulu.
