When developing an adventure based in Chult I was designing an area around the final showdown, when I decided the adventure was too bland, so to spice it up I added an interesting little idea. I am not sure whether this is in any of the published books, as I only have the three core rule books, and an adventure, but I felt like this idea would be interesting for areas that has the interest for multiple teams of enemies. I have some rules in place but feel as though these are unfinished.
Movement:
armies can move 10 miles per day
Battle: different armies have different creatures inside, on average 30-40 enemies
Turn based movement:
When in smaller areas with roaming armies, roll initiative for each team of creatures, and movement is acted in turns. Movement during turns in these smaller areas is decided by the DM.
If anyone could help with developing ideas, I would be thankful.
I'm not quite sure what you really want to do with this idea. Are these roaming encounters for the players? Is this more of large scale combat with armies that are fighting for the hex space they occupy on the map? Clarifying that will help get input, because I can't personally see where to start for what you're looking for.
What I was thinking this could be used for is in situations like ones where there is lots of attention that causes multiple armies to be there, so these armies can be fought in battle by the players, or conduct battle with each other. For example, I had a scene in an adventure I have made, where there was multiple armies all heading to this area of immense Power, and these armies all wanted the power for themselves, so they decided to fight each other, bringing the players into a large conflict.
This idea could be used for multiple situations, like what you said, as encounters for the players, as large scale combat, or just situations like above.
Yea that did clarify it a bit. Although it wasn't well received, WotC put out an Unearthed Arcana article awhile back (found it!) that specifically was for large scale combat with different squads/units within an army. I have used it in my campaign and it was kinda.. meh.. but it's a good starting point I think to jump off to make your own rules for that sort of thing. This covers combat itself but not the movement of armies.
I remember the unearthed arcana, and have not used it. I am still working on the base rules for the idea, since I only thought of it last night, and am yet to use it in my current campaign. It might be used in my campaign soon, but may be a few sessions, I will post the outcome of the idea.

Edit: I hope this answered your question.
