I was playing around with the idea of a soldier/mercenary veteran that gained sorcerous powers but with either of those backgrounds they should have some type of proficiency with armor and weapons and the basic backgrounds don’t. Even the UA1 backgrounds don’t really have that it looks like. Is there a way to give those proficiencies ( 1 class of armor and 2 martial weapons ( 1 melee and 1 missile) or is that a no go with the present set up?
Take a race that grants weapon proficiencies like elf, a race that grants armor proficiency like dwarf, or just be a variant human

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

I was hoping to avoid having to take multiple feats or limiting things to particular races - these are/were supposed to be backgrounds and things like soldier and mercenary veteran really should provide at least light armor and shield proficiency as well as some sort of martial melee and missile proficiency ( even if only one of each) otherwise how could you have been a soldier or mercenary? I suppose I can see if creating a basic martial feat can be done granting that then custom background might work.
