Hi guys, i’m really new to dnd and i just have been making some characters from ideas I've got, so for one of them I wanted him to be quiet “peaceful” or at least give that image, however I wanted him to have a weapon that makes sense with his backstory so i search and create this, i would gladly like to see what people think, if its too strong, too weak, if there’s a mistake or something, to change it and make it viable. The red parts are things still not clear or I just have no idea how to "solve it" so help on that point is very appreciated.
Context: My character has a demon inside his body captured thanks to his god’s bless, now, after having to kill a lot of demons inside his people he can transform his staff into a scythe. Since he has killed demons inside humans it's like he is, in some way, the death.
The purpose of it is not to have an OP item, it's just give something special to my character which is suppose to be a Domain of Life Cleric so he wants to heal people and help but due to the devil inside and the fact he don't want to lose control over it he gets this souls from “bad people'' to help the god and himself on his life journey. Another option is a Grave domain but that's something I have to check yet.
So I kinda try to create a weapon that suits him well. Its a bit of inspiration from Morgan from The Walking Dead.
The character have a Staff that use as a weapon and he has this ability to transform it.
Quarterstaff: 1d6 bludgeoning Versatile (1d8)
ABILITY: Purify tartarus
As an bonus action you can grant your divine power to your staff and acquire extra abilities.
Description: You imbue power to the staff in order to use it as a spellcasting focus and it becomes magical if it wasn’t already.
After activating your ability your weapon becomes magic and it deals extra damage based on how many “souls” he has purified and brought to his god. (its explained later)
As an action you can use SERAPHIM which is a strong attack with the scythe. It can be used as many times as half your wisdom modifier (rounded down) until you do a long rest.
Maybe just once per combat??
When you hit an enemy with it the blade of the weapon is made with your power from your god but the rest of it its from the power of the inside demon, so after hitting an enemy you are attacking with the god’s power but the blood it might stick on the weapon is absorbed by the demon, as a “gift” for helping you.
So here is how scaling works in this weapon:
A. If you attack with this weapon and the enemy drops to 0 hit points (and dies “in lore”) you obtain 1 “soul to purify” and a mark of “spilled blood”.
If you attack the enemy with this weapon and it dies NOT in your turn but for other sources (other party members or else) you just get 1 mark of “spilled blood”.
During a long rest you can pray to your god if it can give you more power in order to “better control your devil” since it is getting power from the blood of your enemies. Your god should agree to give you a little bit of more “power” to be in balance with your devil’s power if you give it a “soul to purify” (in this case the god is a good one so it should require something good like a soul of someone that did bad things in order to purify it and make the world a better place). So, if you have a mark of “spilled blood” and 1 “soul to purify”, the god would provide you with more power ON YOUR WEAPON.
If you find dead creatures on your journey you can try to get part of their soul in order to help them and not end lost or in bad hands, so you do a (medicine or wisdom) check and if its higher than, for example 10 or 13 (don't know what would be better) you can gain a sharp of soul, with 4 of them you can use it as a soul to purify, but the moment you get a “soul to purify” from killing an enemy , if you do a pray to your god, it will take the soul and the sharps, so you are capped to 1 charge per long rest. This is a way to get the soul if you are having so many problems getting it from a kill and might give more spiciness to the role maybe? since you have to find dead people after a fight, or animals or whatever with a soul.
This bonus on damage is capped like this: (you CAN'T use divine strike if you use SERAPHIM but with just the transformation I think maybe you could use it?)
1d6 (1d8) slashing/piercing + 1d4 Rad + 1d4 Nec + Wis → lvl 5
1d6 (1d8) slashing/piercing + 2d6 Rad + 1d4 Nec + Wis → lvl 10
1d6 (1d8) slashing/piercing + 3d6 Rad + 1d6 Nec + Wis → lvl 15
1d6 (1d8) slashing/piercing + 3d8 Rad + 1d8 Nec + Wis → lvl 18
1d6 (1d8) slashing/piercing + Infinit Rad + Infinit Nec + Wis → lvl >18
When the weapon is transformed but don't have SERAPHIM charges you do 1d6 (1d8) slashing/piercing + 1d4/1d4/1d6/1d8/infinit Necrotic + wisdom (plus maybe divine strike) th necrotic damage is also capped but at lvl 10 you would be doing 1d6+1d4+wisdom+divine strike, i think its quite decent for being an extra action to activate and then an action to attack with it.
I haven’t talked about this but i suppose that, to hit with everything would be:
1d20+proficiency+wisdom to hit with just the transformation
When you use SERAPHIM its a saving throw (i suppose? Or would it be the same as if it's just the transformation) of wisdom with a DC of 10 or 8+ proficiency+wisdom + maybe something else? amount of souls? so at lvl 5 would be something like 10+3+3/4+1/2? i think its a lot so maybe just 10 or 8+ proficiency+wisd
I suppose you would use the staff and a secondary weapon if you are somewhere you don't want to be seen with a scythe on your hands.
Thank you very much to anyone who read this, maybe you don't respond to me but maybe this gave you an idea.
