In DND 5E there are a lot of ways to get a crit, that doesn’t involve a NAT 20 attack.
But to make those 20’s more rewarding and chars that attacks a lot of times more compelling I like to present you for a new optional rule. This rule also encourages teamwork and use of healing/help actions in combat.
Any attack roll resulting in a natural roll of 20 on the die applies a Weakened Condition.
This condition give -2 to AC and increase the range to be crit in by 1.
It is fairly easy to counter again, but it cost one of these actions from someone:
Spend an action to counter it.
Help action from anyone within 5 feet
Drinking a Healing Potion as an Action or an ally giving it as an action
Any healing ability/Spell that cost an action
Consideration: if you allow the condition to stack, please remember, that also goes against the players, and swarms of small creatures suddenly can become a threat. A pack of wolves with “Pack Tactics” have a lot of dice they roll, and hence the likelihood of Nat 20’s increase
Roleplaying wise this is also fun, who haven’t seen in some movie that someone creates a weakness in an opponent, and then takes full benefit of it, or the team gets an edge?
I can think of many, but one example is Starship troopers. Standing on the back of a huge beetle blasting holes in the armor, then throw a grenade in the hole.
In real life it’s the same. In MMA, boxing or similar fighting, if you create an edge you use it. Same goes for wildlife predators, create an opening then pounce.
