I'm about to DM my first campaign, and one of the podcasts I listen to has attunement as like, a small task or a requirement to meet. Example: to Attune this item, you must do blank for blank days. Is this a normal option, or is it just a house rule?
The basic rule is just "attunement requires a short rest, provided to meet the prerequisites (a specific class, being a spellcaster etc.)"
I think that's deadly dull though. A lot of the items I homebrew have more interesting attunement requirements. Some of them require taking that short rest at a specific time (sunrise, for instance) or in a specific place or setting (a forest clearing). I've got a hag-created hammer that offers a twisted form of resurrection, but you can only attune to it if you use it to build a coffin. One magic sword's attunement requirement was "to face a fear", which created a role-playing opportunity for the player to finally unlock its full power. I've made another magic weapon which allows an attuned wielder to fly... but the attunement requirement is to fall at least 50 feet , so you basically have to jump off a cliff or high building to attune to it
