From now on, any 5e game I run, I am adding a line from the AD&D version of the spell: ".....if the Fam should ever be killed, the m-u will PERMANENTLY lose DOUBLE that number of hit points", where hit points refers to the 2-4 HP an AD&D Fam has. I am going to add this to my game, and let's see how many low level Wizards start conjuring Familiars at 1st level. Of course, this is still trivial unless the HP of the Familiar is substantial.
Also, I will enforce the 15 min/spell level/slot of memorization/commune time for a caster getting a spell slot back. Getting back two 1sts and one 2nd is still trivial at one hour total, and most DM's will handwave that away. But if the caster is trying to get back two 3rd level and one 4th level slots, that is now a non-trivial 2.5 hours of time, and many a group cannot sit still while that happens.

I have grown tired of the I-win buttons.
