I am creating a melee based subclass for druids inspired by the warden class on eso and the oath of the ancients paladins. I'm looking for ideas on what kinds of features and abilities to give the subclass. Also I've never made a subclass from scratch so I could use some advice plan to share it when it's completed

There's nothing wrong or boring about being a Human Fighter with a Sword and Shield. It's all about HOW you play them, WHO they are, and WHAT they do!
If you're thinking about creating a new sub-class, you'll definitely want to borrow features from a martial class. For example, allow for weapon mastery, fighting style, etc. @Agilemind's subclass shows some good thought. For now my Warden druid is just multi-classing taking a 1 level dip in Fighter, although some of the higher level features of fighters is very appealing, e.g., action surge, extra attack, indomitable, etc. If I have the time, I might create a druid-martial subclass too... I'd try to balance the features of both a druid and fighter.

Lycanthropy is the spice of night.
You can have a look at my Circle of the Warrior for inspiration: https://www.dndbeyond.com/subclasses/328148-circle-of-the-warrior
Alternatively look at the Valor Bard and Bladesinger Wizard.
