Okay, so I am going to start off by saying that if this kind of thread already exists, I apologize. There are 749 pages to comb through and I am being lazy out of necessity...
So, here's my dilemma: I am working on a Homebrew subclass for a Fighter. The concept is a subclass that allows the player to choose the general subclass, then choose a specific path within that subclass. That path then determines which of the options in the later features are supposed to automatically populate with that path choice as the pre-requisite.
I built the entire subclass, and am in the "playtest" stage to see if I can get it to work in the character builder the way I want. But, it isn't, and it is frustrating me. Fighter has features at 3, 7, 10, 15, and 18. I have general features at each of those levels, and each feature has an equal number of options that correspond to the number of initial paths the player can choose in the subclass. Each of the options references the initial choice as the pre-requisite for the corresponding path at each feature. I can get the general feature to appear in the character builder, but none of the data from the options show up under each feature. I don't want a player to choose anything after that first choice. I only want the initial path to be chosen then the character builder just installs the correct option at the level feature it is under. And I don't want to have to make multiple versions of the subclass to separate the paths into a unique subclass selections.
Can anyone help me figure out what I am doing wrong? I'm 95% sure that it is something ridiculously simple that I need to do to get things to work correctly. I just can't, for the life of me, see what it is. Since I know someone is going to ask for this to see where things are currently, here's the link to the unpublished homebrew: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2405439-elemental-champion/subclass/2405439/edit
We aren't able to look at unpublished homebrew, so you'll have to publish it if you want people here to be able to see it (or they would need to join your campaign).
I want to make sure I understand what you're asking, so let me know if this is correct:
You have a class feature (presumably at Level 3) that lets a player choose a path.
At each subsequent level, they are granted a feature based on their original choice, so they aren't making a choice (and branching further at these levels).
The base description text for each feature shows up in the character builder, but the option text does not.
You want the option text to show up, but don't want them to have to select anything from a dropdown.
If my understanding is correct, I don't think you can. If you want it to show up in the character builder, you'd have to have them select the option (even though there'd only be one choice). If anyone else has a way around it, I'd love to hear, as I faced a similar dilemma with this one some of my subclasses. When there are only a few options, I just list out all the potential effects in the Description of the main feature. For ones with a high number of options, I have people select from a dropdown even though there's only once choice. Definitely not ideal, but I suspect it's not something that'll get changed soon. :\
Weird, you used to be able to see unpublished stuff through the forum... another thing that changed. As for publishing, if you have anything "licensed or private homebrew" linked to the homebrew you can't publish it. This subclass has a small standalone feature that I created for a random reason but it works well so I added it to this subclass. Plus, there are some spells that the subclass inherently learns, and they are in the modifiers so I can't publish it because that stuff is "licensed"... So, I can publish homebrew on DDB because it has licensed content attached to it, when I have to purchase the licensed content on DDB to even use it in general....
Anyway, your summary is more or less correct. I just want the options that exist on each subclass feature (at levels 3, 7, 10, 15, 18) to fill in where they are supposed to based on a single choice made in one of the level 3 features that appears when you choose the subclass.
I know this is probably sounding obnoxiously over thought but I found an old thread that described exactly what I am supposed to do, which I did before I even found the thread I just mentioned because it made logical sense to do so when I was building the subclass. But, it isn't working how I thought it would.
Thanks for the feedback! Like I said in the original post, I am 95% sure it is something trivial that is stopping things from working correctly, and I am going to be mad at myself if someone offers it as a suggestion, or a flash of inspiration makes me think of trying it. Appreciate the time you took to answer!
