Well, from a gameplay standpoint early versions of the game had a resurrection survival roll which was a d100 roll keyed to constitution. You also permanently lost a CON point when you were brought back from the dead. Come to think of it, if you died during an adventure you received 2000 XP instead of whatever you had earned as well.
From a RP perspective encourage the player to tell a story about his visit to the afterlife.
Perhaps roleplay the calling of the spirit back to the material plane?

I'm in the midst of planning my next campaign and I'd really like coming back from the dead to mean something, both rules- wise and roleplay.
I don't mean the cases where Revivify can be used. I mean when a character is fully dead and has been for days, months, or more.
Asking folks to share what house rules you use to give more weight and import to this event.
